Why visit Iquique?

Surf, sand dunes and a nitrate-boom old town

Iquique is squeezed onto a narrow shelf between the ocean and a 600-metre wall of desert. In front are surf breaks and the long curve of Cavancha beach; behind, a giant dune and one of the most reliable paragliding sites on the planet; in the middle, a boulevard of wooden mansions built when this was the nitrate capital of the world.

It is also the base for the Tarapacá region: the UNESCO-listed ghost towns of Humberstone and Santa Laura are 45 minutes away, the oasis of Pica and the giant geoglyphs of the pampa make easy day trips, and beyond them the road climbs to flamingo lagoons and Aymara villages at nearly 4,000 m. This guide shows you how to fit it together — and is honest about what you can and cannot book online.

Where to go

The coast, the pampa and the altiplano

The beach gets you here, but the timber old town, the dune, the saltpeter ghost towns and the oasis of Pica are what turn a stopover into a proper trip.

Sunshades and swimmers crowd the sand of Playa Cavancha in Iquique, with palms and apartment towers behind Iquique city & coast

Playa Cavancha

The city beach with a desert behind it

A long curve of sand in the middle of the city, sheltered by the Cavancha peninsula and backed by palms, a landscaped promenade and a wall of apartment towers. It is the calmest swimming beach in Iquique and the centre of local life from morning joggers to sunset.

Wooden nitrate-era houses with balconies along the pedestrian Paseo Baquedano in Iquique Iquique city & coast

Paseo Baquedano & Plaza Prat

A timber boulevard from the nitrate boom

Iquique’s historic core: a pedestrian street of balconied wooden mansions built with nitrate money between about 1880 and 1920, ending at a square with a white clock tower, a 19th-century theatre and a Moorish-style social club. It is a protected heritage zone and the best walk in the city.

The timber-and-iron leaching plant and tall chimney of the Santa Laura saltpeter works in the Atacama Desert The pampa: saltpeter towns, oases & geoglyphs

Humberstone & Santa Laura

UNESCO ghost towns of the saltpeter age

Two abandoned nitrate works in the desert 47 km east of Iquique, preserved by the dry air since they closed around 1960. Humberstone is a complete company town with a theatre, market and iron swimming pool; Santa Laura keeps its towering leaching plant. Together they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The long sand ridge of Cerro Dragón rising behind the buildings of Iquique Iquique city & coast

Cerro Dragón

A giant dune inside the city

A ridge of sand about four kilometres long that rises between Iquique and the coastal cliff, protected as a nature sanctuary. Paragliders launched from Alto Hospicio drift over it almost every day of the year, and its slopes are where the city goes sandboarding.

The spring-fed pool of Cocha Resbaladero in Pica, surrounded by greenery and a walkway The pampa: saltpeter towns, oases & geoglyphs

Pica & Matilla

A green oasis of lemons and warm springs

An oasis town about 115 km south-east of Iquique where warm spring water turns the desert into orchards of mango, guava and the small, fragrant limón de Pica. People come to swim in the Cocha Resbaladero rock pool, drink fresh juice and see the churches of Pica and neighbouring Matilla.

Geometric and animal geoglyphs covering a brown hillside at Cerros Pintados The pampa: saltpeter towns, oases & geoglyphs

Atacama Giant & Pintados

Messages drawn on the desert

Two of the great geoglyph sites of the Americas. On Cerro Unita, east of Huara, the Atacama Giant is among the largest prehistoric human figures in the world; at Pintados, to the south, hundreds of figures of people, llamas and geometric signs cover the hillsides beside an old caravan route.

Visiting Iquique: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is Iquique worth visiting?

Yes — it combines a real city beach, a nitrate-era old town, world-class paragliding and easy access to the UNESCO-listed saltpeter works of Humberstone. It is also a natural stop between Arica and San Pedro de Atacama. See our travel guide.

How do you get to Iquique?

Fly from Santiago to Diego Aracena airport (about two and a half hours), which is around 40 km south of the city, or take a bus from Arica, Calama or Antofagasta. See our getting here guide.

How many days do I need in Iquique?

Three days is a good minimum: one for the old town, the Esmeralda museum and the beach, one for paragliding and the dune, and one for Humberstone and Pica. Add two more for the geoglyphs and the altiplano.

Does it ever rain in Iquique?

Hardly ever. This is one of the driest inhabited coasts on earth. Winter mornings can be grey with coastal fog, but it is mild all year. Read our best time to visit guide.

Can I book Humberstone or Pica tours online?

Not on GetYourGuide at the time of writing — its Iquique catalogue covers paragliding, sandboarding, a city tour with a boat trip and one long altiplano excursion. Humberstone and Pica are easy by rental car or bus, or through agencies in town. Our tours page explains the options.
